FAQs

How does a smart thermostat work with my existing air-conditioning system?

The Reliance smart thermostat replaces the traditional wall unit and communicates directly with your air-conditioning equipment through the same low-voltage wiring already in place. Built-in sensors and algorithms measure indoor temperature, humidity and occupancy, then signal your AC to cycle on or off for optimal comfort. Because the thermostat is internet-connected, you can also program or adjust temperatures remotely, and the device continuously refines its schedule based on your usage patterns.

How much can I save on energy bills by upgrading to a Reliance smart thermostat?

Savings vary by home size, insulation, climate and user behaviour, but most customers report 10–20 % lower cooling costs in the first year. The thermostat reduces run-time by automatically setting back temperatures when you’re asleep or away, offers real-time energy-use reports so you can spot inefficiencies, and sends maintenance alerts that help keep your AC running at peak efficiency. Many local utilities also offer rebates that can shorten payback to less than a year.

Is the Reliance smart thermostat compatible with my current HVAC setup?

Our thermostat works with the vast majority of 24-V forced-air systems, including single-stage, multi-stage, heat-pump and dual-fuel configurations. If your system requires a common (C) wire for power, we’ll verify that one is available or supply a power extender kit at no extra cost. For homes with line-voltage, high-voltage or proprietary systems, contact Reliance for a free compatibility check.

Can I control the thermostat from my smartphone or smart speaker?

Yes. Download the free Reliance Comfort app for iOS or Android to adjust temperatures, change modes, create schedules and view energy reports from anywhere. The thermostat also supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant and Apple HomeKit; simply link your account and say things like “Alexa, set the living-room temperature to 23 degrees.” All remote commands are encrypted end-to-end for security.

What is involved in installation—can I do it myself?

If you’re comfortable turning off power at the breaker panel and matching wire labels, you can usually install the thermostat in about 30 minutes using the included step-by-step guide and mounting hardware. However, Reliance also offers professional installation, which includes a compatibility check, wiring, system test and a tutorial on using the app. Professional installation is recommended if you lack a C-wire, have multi-stage equipment, or simply want a worry-free experience.

What happens if my Wi-Fi goes down or there’s a power outage?

During an internet outage, the thermostat continues to operate in stand-alone mode, maintaining your last programmed schedule and running the AC as usual. You won’t be able to make remote changes until connectivity is restored, but on-device controls remain fully functional. In a power outage, the thermostat shuts off along with the HVAC equipment and restarts automatically when power returns, keeping all saved settings intact in its non-volatile memory.
