FAQs
What is a learning thermostat and how does it differ from a standard programmable model?
A learning thermostat is an intelligent, Wi-Fi–enabled device that studies how and when you heat or cool your home. During the first week or two after installation it records the adjustments you make, the temperatures you prefer at different times of the day, and whether you are home or away. It then builds an automatic schedule and continually refines it. Unlike a conventional programmable thermostat, which relies on you to enter and periodically update its time-of-day settings, a learning thermostat adapts on its own, uses built-in occupancy sensors, outside-weather data and geofencing from your smartphone to optimise comfort and efficiency with minimal input from you.
How can a learning thermostat from Reliance help lower my heating and cooling costs?
Independent studies show that learning thermostats can reduce heating bills by up to 15 % and cooling bills by as much as 12 %. Savings come from several features: auto-scheduling that prevents unnecessary heating or cooling when you are asleep or away, Eco or Away set-backs activated by motion and phone location, intelligent stage and fan control that runs equipment at the most efficient levels, and real-time energy-use reporting that encourages small behavioural changes. Reliance also programs the thermostat to match the efficiency curve of your specific furnace, A/C or heat pump so you get the maximum benefit right from day one.
Will a Reliance learning thermostat work with my existing HVAC system?
In most cases, yes. Learning thermostats are compatible with the majority of 24-volt forced-air furnaces, central air conditioners, heat pumps (including dual-fuel setups), and even boiler systems that use a standard thermostat interface. They can handle single-stage, multi-stage, and variable-speed equipment. Some homes require a common (C) wire for constant power; if yours doesn’t have one, Reliance technicians can usually add a C-wire adapter or run a new conductor during installation. Before any work is scheduled, we perform a free compatibility check—online, by phone, or in person—to confirm your system will work flawlessly with the new thermostat.
What can I expect when Reliance installs a learning thermostat?
A certified Reliance technician will arrive at your home at the scheduled time, remove the old thermostat, verify the wiring, install any needed adapters, mount and level the new unit, and connect it to your home Wi-Fi network. We then walk you through the mobile app, set your preferred temperature range, and show you how to use voice control (if desired). The entire visit typically takes about an hour. Installation includes a one-year workmanship warranty, the manufacturer’s parts warranty, and access to Reliance 24/7 live technical support should you have questions later.
Do learning thermostats qualify for rebates or incentives?
Yes. Many provincial energy-efficiency programs and local utilities offer rebates—often $50 to $100—when you upgrade to an ENERGY STAR® certified smart or learning thermostat. In addition, a learning thermostat can be included in broader home-energy retrofit programs such as the Canada Greener Homes Initiative when paired with eligible HVAC equipment. Reliance keeps current on all incentives and will provide the necessary documentation and explanation so you can claim every available dollar.
If my Wi-Fi or power goes out, will the learning thermostat still control my furnace and A/C?
Absolutely. The thermostat stores your last saved schedule locally and continues to run your heating and cooling equipment even without an internet connection. You can still adjust temperature using the unit’s touchscreen or dial. When Wi-Fi service is restored, remote app control, weather updates and energy-report syncing resume automatically. In the event of a power outage, the thermostat restarts and reconnects within minutes—no reprogramming required.
